Spring Lawn Update: What to Expect This Season

Spring has officially arrived in Waukesha County, and with it comes a renewed sense of energy in our landscapes. At Beautiful Blooms Landscape & Design, we’re beginning to see signs of life and color emerge—Serviceberries are just starting to bloom, Forsythias and Cornelian cherry Dogwoods are showing off their golden glory, and Daffodils are popping up sporadically depending on the cultivar.

As lawns begin to green and perennials start pushing through the soil, we’ve also noticed an uptick in client questions about early-season lawn conditions. Whether you’re currently enrolled in our lawn care or mowing services—or simply interested in learning more—we want to share some helpful seasonal insights.

Why Are There Patchy Spots in My Lawn?

One of the most common concerns we’re hearing this spring is about bare or patchy areas in lawns. And you’re not alone—these patches are unusually widespread this season.

Here’s why:

  • Squirrel Activity: These critters are digging for the acorns and nuts they buried last fall.
  • Deer and Turkey Damage: Wildlife has been foraging aggressively for bulbs and bugs due to a mild winter that didn’t significantly reduce population levels.
  • General Spring Recovery: Lawns are just beginning to emerge from dormancy, and Kentucky bluegrass in particular is slower to green up early in the season.

If you look closely, you’ll likely see tiny green blades pushing through even in the most bare-looking patches. That’s a good sign—and one that tells us we need to be patient.

Our Approach: Watch and Wait

While we’re actively monitoring these patchy areas, we will not begin lawn repair work until mid-May through June. Why the delay? Because most lawns are capable of self-repair once they’re fully out of dormancy and conditions are right for vigorous grass growth.

Starting repair work too early could result in unnecessary costs for you—and that’s something we want to avoid unless we know it’s truly needed. Our Lawn Care Technician, Ryan, is making Round 1 visits now and keeping a close eye on lawn health. If we observe anything unusual or in need of corrective action, we’ll contact you directly with a personalized recommendation.
